A Little Fall of Rain

"Each afternoon I would run my demons hard until I left them heaving by the roadside." -
Christopher Solomon

I ran solo today. When it's cold and rainy outside and I'm sitting in my office shivering, my nemesis, doubt, tries to talk me out of running:

Doubt: Look at that rain and the size of those puddles-you don't want to be out there.
Me: **Sigh** well, the treadmill
Doubt: You hate the treadmill. Remember how you said three miles was the limit of going nowhere? You're supposed to run 6 miles today-that's double nowhere.
Me: You're right, I do hate the treadmill...and it looks so dark out there.
Doubt: And you'll be alone out there. Remember that self-defense class and the statistics on all the runners who are attacked when they are alone.
Me: Oh yeah...
Doubt: Well, stay in where it's warm and cozy and safe and there's a brownie left over waiting for you in the cupboard.
Me: **imagining the brownie I ate last night making it's way to my stomach and hanging out in the form of fat** Hey Doubt, prepare to get wet.

Doubt left me alone after the first mile. The rain felt good. Winter running can be the most challenging in terms of getting out there, but I know I need it.

  1. It's funny to hear how similar others internal debates go, change a few words here and there and it could be my own mental debate. Great post.

  2. These runs that start with some doubt usually turn out great. Rain and winter running is actually nice.

  3. Great post indeed... I love running in the rain and snow and winter. But getting out the door is definitely never easy. Glad I'm not the only one that has to talk myself into it on a regular basis!
